Sam Porritt on JESSE ASH
Jesse’s piece consists of a drawing of either Vanessa’s or my work for the exhibition, framed in such a way as to hinder the viewer from looking at the drawing and its subject simultaneously. The drawing was made in accordance with a process, constructed by Jesse to explore the ideas contained by the premise of the exhibition. First, he asked Vanessa and myself to place a chair in front of the other’s work. From this position he then made drawings of each of our works. Then he asked Limoncello to choose one drawing to be exhibited as part of the exhibition, the remaining drawing to be gifted to the artist whose work was depicted.

Jesse Ash on
VANESSA BILLY
Think of granddad’s belt, high waist held up tight around his belly. It’s that sort of physical tension in Vanessa’s piece. Think of his shirt as the gallery walls and the belt as this metal material that Vanessa has found… In the case of the gallery the materials that make up the space are plaster, brick, paint on the walls and screws made of steel that hold frames made of painted wood, with art made of paper and ink inside. I think Vanessa is revealing this materiality by subtly re-arranging the functions of the objects she uses.
Vanessa Billy (B. 1978, Geneva, Switzerland, based London) completed a BA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art (2001). Recent solo shows include Limoncello, London, and
BolteLang, Zurich, as well as international group shows. Billy is the co-editor of annual publication FLATWORK, with Kitty Anderson.
Vanessa Billy on STELLA CAPES
Stella has been hand-carving wooden objects. I think they are like castanets, which will be for the viewers to take away. There seems to be potential in the objects, they have to be taken and activated by the viewer. Stella also mentioned the clapping sound, so the work must have something to do with applause, affirmation or celebration.
Stella Capes (B. 1978, Sheffield, based London) completed a BA Painting at University of Brighton (2000) and an MA Painting at Royal College of Art (2003). Recent solo shows include
Associates, London, and Fri-Art, Fribourg, as well as international group shows. Forthcoming shows include Bank Street Arts, Sheffield, and e-flux Project Space, New York.
Stella Capes on SAM PORRITT
Sam is making an object-based work that references the charity box… I’m assuming the work is questioning distribution in some way, perhaps quite broadly or more specifically of the division of wealth? I’m also guessing that it’s about the act of giving and the economics of philanthropy?
Sam Porritt (B. 1979 and based London) completed a BA Sculpture at Chelsea School of art (2002) and an MA Fine Art at the Royal Academy Schools (2005). His recent solo exhibitions include Brown and
The Hex, both London, as well as international group shows.
